Hi. Been a while, I know... Truth is after the On Being Woman project was revealed, I went into a bit of a "what now?" moment. Months. I had worked so much on the project, for so many months, that I didn't want to let it go. But it had to have time to breathe, be received by people and have its own life, without me being such a helicopter parent. It's not over yet, I am still working on the second image for each woman, as well as a book, which is taking so much patience and effort, but will be worth it in the end. Stay tuned...
In the meanwhile, I was pretty busy with, you know, work. Clients. I went into full shooting/editing mode and kept the blog as a reference point for people to view all the images from the project. I didn't know if I was going to write another blog post, until recently, when I realized that this is my platform to not only showcase my work, but to tell stories, people in extraordinary circumstances living daily life. I have met some amazing people during all these years as a photojournalist and was always restricted to telling their story through a few photos, and relying on the writers to do the rest. Many times what I captured and what the article reflected were on diametrically opposite sides of the spectrum. I know people view things based on their own experiences in life and it was always hard to release my photos not knowing how they would be interpreted in words. Here came my light bulb moment, at 2AM on a Monday. Because... insomnia. I have this platform. I am not a writer, but I try. And I want to tell your story. I am working on a two long term ones that are taking a bit of time management to bring to life, but I'm doing it. I always thought of myself as a photographer, but that's a limiting way of looking at creativity in Self. To exercise the muse, I also paint. I have never shown my paintings in public, but I have been painting since I was a child. Am I good at it? Art is subjective.
The other day I decided to be proud of what I created and showed these two pieces
They sold in a couple of days. Blew me away.
Now, I paint for me, I photograph for the world to see. I write, a lot. Things that nobody will ever see, but I do. So, I decided to give it a try here, on this platform, and tell stories that touch my heart, are important to me and forget about the fact that I am not a writer. Maybe my words will be received in such positive manner as these paintings were and will be welcomed to accompany my photos. So yeah, I will be doing more of that, and more painting.
Thank you for being on this creative journey with me. And if you have a story that you want to share, I am here, camera in hand, ready to give it life on the blog.
In Gratitude,
LDG
